BACKGROUND

ASAL’s – Arid and Semi-Arid Lands of Africa including Kenya are endowed with a rich diversity of plant resources especially gums and resins. These are articles of commerce that can contribute to the living standards of local inhabitants and the region. The region, which depends almost entirely on livestock production, is impoverished with poverty levels being among the highest in the country and during severe drought these communities across Africa loses 80 % of their live stocks. INTER Africa recognized the potential that exist in developing the off take of gums and resins as the right step –towards sustainable economic development of these arid and semi-arid of Northern Kenya and ASAL Africa. The main objective is to develop the off take of ASAL plant products ( gums and resins) and assist the social – economic development to poverty eradication through extensive training on quality production, tapping, harvesting and post – harvesting handling, grading, storage, processing, packaging and marketing. Indication shows that where already gum Arabic are collected from very few trained communities they no longer cut trees for charcoal as they see the value of harvesting gums and resins and automatically protecting the trees. Hence through the Company’s aim it has a big positive environmental effect through protection, conservation and landscape restoration.

The Arid and Semi-Arid Lands are approximately 75% of lands in Kenya. Livestock is still the most important resources for the pastoralist through informal industrialization. However with population pressure and many pastoralists without livestock due to severe drought, the off take of plant products (gums and resins) has remained as the only alternative income for many and if these Gums and Resins Sub – sector is developed then 70% poverty will be reduced by the year 2030 VISION and all SDG17 improved in ASAL Africa/Kenya. The company will involve a widespread training program which will involve the mobilization among the indigenous communities who are producing ASAL’s plant products (gums and resins) as representative from every village of the production area through governance, quality and quantity controlled.

INTER Africa is a social – economic development agency whose core activity is the development and conservation of ASAL’s natural resources through the Ward Community Woodland Forest groups and County Gums and Resins Co-operatives, the mission is to stimulate and accelerate the community ASAL’s plants (gums and resins) trade development and in Kenya to impact on principles:

  1. The campaign against poverty and unemployment through Asal counties on all ASAL’s natural
resources and forest (gums and resins)
  2. The Integration of the region into the National/Counties economy in GDP growth.
  3. The Integration of ASAL’s in Decarbonizing, Conservation and Landscape restoration.
  4. The Sustainable human and social development with emphasis on human resource development and the role of pastoralist in social – economy in relations to Asal natural resources.
